LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Just a few games into the season, its clear 11th-ranked Xavier has some work to do closing out games. The Musketeers nearly let a 16-point second-half lead disappear, but Trevon Bluiett hit some clutch free throws late to help them pull away from Northern Iowa for a 67-59 victory in the Tire Pros Invitational championship game Sunday night. The Panthers came within five points with 1:35 left while Xaviers offense struggled, but then the Musketeers (5-0) hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final 57 seconds. That stalled the rally by Northern Iowa, which seemed poised to overcome a double-digit deficit for the second time in as many games.Id like to have those last four or five minutes back, but its so early, Xavier coach Chris Mack said. Were a little bit better in terms of finishing the game, but we still have a ways to go in that department.Bluiett converted 5 of 6 free throws after missing some critical shots earlier that helped open the door for the comeback attempt. We kind of base everything on a next-play mentality, so you cant really worry over the past plays, said Bluiett, who finished with a game-high 21 points. My teammates do a good job of kind of helping me forget about that. After going into halftime with the game tied 30-30, the Musketeers started the second strong with Bluiett and Edmond Sumner leading the way. Sumner scored 11 of his 17 points in the final 20 minutes. But once the Panthers (3-1) found their rhythm against Xaviers 1-1-3 zone and man-to-man defense, the game began to turn late. Jordan Ashton and Klint Carlson hit some big shots to bring Northern Iowa back, but the Musketeers showed poise just in time to pull away.Sometimes you get into the game and teams are maybe not what they seem like on film, but Xavier is every bit as good and in some ways even better, UNI coach Ben Jacobson said. We had a tremendous amount of respect for them even before this game and Ive got more now because they have so many ways they can beat you, offensively everybody can make plays. Now the two teams get to do it all over again when they meet Saturday at Xavier.Honestly, Im pretty excited, Bluiett said. They are good team and I think they are going to bring their A-game when they come back. They kind of have some motivation now and I think we will be ready for it, as well.BIG PICTUREN. Iowa: The Panthers are great 3-point shooters, but their shots were not falling consistently against Xavier. Morgan was the only shooter to show up on Sunday.Xavier: The Musketeers showed a variety of defenses to keep the Panthers off balance, switching from a 1-1-3 zone to man-to-man. Xavier has plenty of fire power on offense with J.P Macura and Quentin Goodin hitting big shots throughout the game.POLL IMPLICATIONSXavier: A win over previously unbeaten Northern Iowa could help the Musketeers standing.DOUBLING DOWNXavier consistently sent double teams at Northern Iowas Bennett Koch in the post in order to limit him, and it worked.Koch was just 4 of 8 from the field for 11 points and turned the ball over six times in the paint.ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMUNIs Jeremy Morgan joined Bluiett and Macura on the all-tournament team along with Oklahomas Jordan Woodard and Davidsons Jack Gibbs. Bluiett was the tournament MVP after scoring 56 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and getting seven assists over the three games. Morgan led UNI with 20 points in this one.UP NEXTN. Iowa: The Panthers travel to Cincinnati to face Xavier again on Saturday.Xavier: The Musketeers host Northern Iowa on Saturday. Maillot Equipe De France Coupe Du Monde 2018 . Andrew Luck lost his favourite target and the Indianapolis locker room lost one of its most revered leaders when Reggie Wayne was diagnosed Monday with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee that will cost him the rest of the season. Maillot Antoine Griezmann . MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez also will attend the session, which was announced Monday. The league has discussed placing its next two expansion teams in Miami and Atlanta. http://www.nouveaumaillotequipedefrance.fr/ . Pierce was ejected in the third quarter of Indianas 103-86 win Monday. George Hill stole a bad pass and was going in for a layup, and Pierce hustled back and appeared to be trying to wrap him up. Maillot Olivier Giroud . The winner Saturday will remain in the elite 10-team field next year. "We talked about wanting to be disciplined and stick with our game plan and good things will come," Draisaitl said, who had two goals for the victors. Maillot Benjamin Pavard . According to a report from the Winnipeg Free Press, the Bombers will name Acting GM Kyle Walters to the post full time. MILWAUKEE -- Chase Anderson struggled with his command, and St. Louis capitalized.Anderson lasted just four innings, and the Milwaukee Brewers had four hits in an 8-1 loss to Carlos Martinez and the Cardinals. They make you battle, Anderson said. Walking five guys against them last time and this time is obviously not what I want to do.Anderson (4-10) threw 94 pitches while allowing two runs and four hits. The right-hander dropped to 0-4 with a 10.43 ERA in his last four starts.Actually, I thought he pitched pretty well and made big pitches when he had to, Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. The pitches just added up real fast.Jhonny Peralta, Tommy Pham and Aledmys Diaz homered for St. Louis, helping Carlos Martinez to his first win since June 11.Peralta hit a leadoff drive in the second. Pham connected for a solo shot and Diaz belted a three-run homer during the Cardinals five-run ninth.Martinez (8-6) struck out a season-high 11 in five innings. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits with four walks. We did a good job getting his pitch (count) up. He only lasted five innings, which you have to consider a success, Counsell said.Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit an RBI single in the third for Milwaukees only run. The Brewers stole three bases in the inning but left the bases loaded.Tyler Lyons relieved Martinez and pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings. Matt Bowman got two outs and Seth Maness worked the ninth.Stephen Piscotty had two hits and scored two runs for St. Louis, and Jedd Gyorko singled in Yadier Molina in the eighth. Alberto Rosario drove in the Cardinals final run with his first career hit.BEE DELAYThe start of the game was delayed nearly 10 minutes while Milwaukees grounds crew attempted to control a swarm of bees that gathered in the corner of the right-fielld fence.ddddddddddddPiscotty was the right fielder for the Cardinals, and Matheny said he asked him if he was allergic. Then youve got a major issue, Matheny said. Thats deathly. I wouldnt have started the game until they figured it out. But he was all right with it, so the show goes on.AFTER FURTHER REVIEWAn apparent inning-ending double play turned by the Brewers in the third was overturned after a review, which showed second baseman Scooter Gennett did not get his foot on the bag at second. When play resumed, Molina drew a walk before Anderson struck out Gyorko. Anderson had to throw 11 additional pitches as a result of the ruling.Youre thinking about catching the ball, throwing the ball and getting out of the way of the guy coming in, Gennett said. Those are things we have to adjust to with the way the game is evolving.STOP THIEFBrewers shortstop Jonathan Villa swiped second and third in the third inning, giving him 31 stolen bases for the season, tops in the major leagues. The Brewers stole four bases overall, marking the fourth time this season they have stolen four or more bases in a game.OFF DAYBrewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy was out of the starting lineup for routine rest. Counsell said Lucroy would start on Sunday.UP NEXTCardinals: Mike Leake (5-7, 4.33 ERA) gets the ball in the series finale on Sunday. He is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against the Brewers this season.Brewers: Junior Guerra (6-1, 2.93 ERA) has won his last three starts, posting a 0.81 ERA. He has pitched 15 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. In his only start against the Cardinals this season, Guerra gave up four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
